Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem 8:00pm One of the greatest pieces of western art music and text, Brahms’ Requiem transcends religious boundaries and provides comfort to us all. Massive in its orchestration and demanding in its libretto, this masterpiece requires consummate artistry and will showcase the extraordinary musicianship of our community orchestra. Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita. A Kartemquin Films production. 3:00pm This film examines the controversies surrounding stem cell research through the personal story of a Northwestern University scientist and his daughter who suffered a spinal cord injury that changed the direction of her father's research. The film is followed by a panel discussion featuring the filmmaker, Maria Finitzo, and Virginia Tech faculty from Departments of Philosophy, Biochemistry, Rhetoric, and Science and Technology Studies. The panelists address questions from the audience and discuss the role of film in sparking productive dialogue on controversial scientific and social issues. Golub: The Late Works are the Catastrophes. A Kartemquin Films production. 7:00pm This film explores the issue of violence in modern societies through the work of the American painter Leon Golub. The film is followed by a panel discussion with filmmaker and president/co-founder of Kartemquin Films Gordon Quinn and Virginia Tech faculty from the Departments of Art and Art History, Communication/Film Studies, and Religious Studies. The panelists will address questions from the audience and reflect on the role of art and artists in processes of social critique and change. DiD080419 “Derelicts of Time” 8:00pm Digital Interactive Sound and Virginia Tech’s Intermedia Studio (DISIS) in conjunction with CCTAD and the Department of Theatre Arts presents the multimedia event DiD080419 "Derelicts of Time" that, through synergies among sound, shape, gesture and movement, explores intersections of art and contemporary culture. Designed by DISIS founder and director Ivica Ico Bukvic in collaboration with Carol Burch-Brown and Ann Kilkelly, the program also features Jay Crone, Sue Ott Rowlands, Dane Webster and select creations by DISIS students.
