Road Closures at Roanoke and Main, Clay and Main in Blacksburg May 14-19

Milling and paving operations are scheduled for the intersections of Roanoke and Main Streets, and Clay and Main Streets in downtown Blacksburg this week. The Roanoke Street intersection closures should be brief and early in the week, but weather permitting Clay Street will be closed from Church Street to Draper Road starting Monday, May 14, through Saturday, May 19. Huckleberry Trail Closure

Portions of the Huckleberry Trail in Blacksburg are scheduled to be closed for repaving on the following dates:

  • Thursday, May 17, 7am - 7pm, Miller Street entrance to the Southgate Bridge
  • Friday, May 18, 7 am - 7pm, Southgate Bridge to Tech Center Drive

Blacksburg Economic Development Roundtables

The Town of Blacksburg is kicking off an update to their 2001 Economic Development Plan which will guide Blacksburg’s economic development policy for the next decade. You are invited to be a part of the planning process. A series of Roundtable Focus Groups will be held May 15-17 to discuss topical issues related to economic development:

  • Entrepreneurs and the high tech economy, 5:00-6:00 PM Tue, May 15 (Wikiteria Cafe, VT CRC)
  • Retail Development, 8:00-9:00 AM Wed, May 16 (Blacksburg Motor Company)
  • The Creative Economy, 12:00-1:00 PM Wed, May 16 (Blacksburg Motor Company)

Free Movie on the Lawn: The Adventures of TinTin

The Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation and Log Cabin BBQ present Movies on the Lawn: The Adventures of TinTin. Intrepid reporter Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor. Admission and popcorn are FREE! Movies begin at dark on the Alexander Black House lawn; see the link for what to bring with you.

2nd Annual Giles County Fiddler's Convention

May 18, 2012 - May 19, 2012 time: Gates open 9am location: Whitt-Riverbend Park
Join us for a weekend of music, camping, and canoeing on the majestic New River! The 2nd Annual Giles County Fiddler's Convention will transform the beautiful 30 acre Whitt-Riverbend Park into a community event with bluegrass and old time competitions, activities for kids, and fun on the river for all ages. Presented by Half Acre Promotions, a local cooperative booking partnership focused on showcasing and preserving the Appalachian music heritage of Southwestern Virginia, in cooperation with the Town of Pearisburg and Giles County Tourism- see www.gilesfiddlersconvention.com for full details.

Color College Avenue

May 19, 2012 time: 10am to 2pm location: College Avenue
Color College Avenue will celebrate Minds Wide Open, Children and the arts in the New River Valley. Children will create a beautiful painting on College Avenue in front of the Lyric Theatre before construction begins on the College Avenue Promenade. Latex paint will be used, please bring your own paintbrush or roller. This free event is sponsored by the Lyric Council, Blacksburg Regional Art Association, and the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech. Montgomery County Household Hazardous Waste Collection

May 19, 2012 time: 8:30am - 11:30am location: Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority
Household Hazardous Waste Day is an annual event for residents of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Montgomery County, and other nearby localities to drop off hazardous materials and keep them out of the landfill. Blacksburg Market Square Jam: Tuesdays, 7-11pm

May 22, 2012 time: 7-11pm location: Blacksburg Market Square
Blacksburg's Market Square Jam takes place 7-11pm every Tuesday evening in the Farmers' Market park downtown on the corner of Draper Road and Roanoke Street. Mostly folks playing old time / bluegrass / folk / blues turn up, but really it can be any type of music as long as it's unplugged. Summer Fine Arts Classes Signup- Performing Arts Institute of Virginia
