Community Connections

Welcome to BEV Community Connections!

We're here to provide Blacksburg area community groups with high quality Internet services. Any area non-profit group or organization can take advantage of the Community Connections program (note that we do not provide any services to for-profit organizations). Please browse the information below for a summary of what BEV Community Connections can offer you.

E-mail

Officers and representatives change from time to time in any community group. BEV Community Connections Email will provide you with two email addresses for your group for specific purposes. Use one for general purpose email, and set the other up for questions about your Website, special programs, or whatever. It's up to you; for example, if your group is called "Blacksburg Cyclist Club", you might select a general email address of cyclist@bburg.bev.net. The second account might be used to manage your Web site, so you might pick cycle-web@bburg.bev.net.

BEV Community Connections email accounts also feature mail forwarding as an added convenience to you. This means that mail delivered to cyclist@bburg.bev.net can be forwarded on to a personal email account. If the president of the Cyclist Club is Mary Smith, and Mary has a personal email account at msmith@bburg.net, mail sent to cyclist@bburg.bev.net would automatically be sent to msmith@bburg.net.

World Wide Web and FTP

With your BEV Community Connections account, you'll also get 2.5 megabytes of storage space for your World Wide Web site. Of course if you're building a Web site, then you'll need a way to upload your pages, so BEV Community Connections also offers an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) filebox to store your pages for easy access for your group's Webmaster.

Listserv

Your BEV Community Connections account also comes with a mailing list, or listserv that will allow you to communicate with large numbers of organization members, or community members you'd like to notify of coming events. This is a much more efficient way of communicating than through simple e-mail and allows users to subscribe and unsubscribe to your mailing list anytime they want, depending on how you set it up.

Mailing lists can be set up in "broadcast" mode or "talk" mode. In broadcast mode, a single person is authorized to send messages to everyone on the list. Broadcast lists are very useful for sending out meeting notices, newsletters, reports, and information that you want everyone in your organization or group to receive. The amount of email generated by broadcast lists is usually very low, so most members of your group will want to be subscribed.

Talk lists let everyone subscribed post to the list. Talk lists can be very good for projects with lots of interaction among members, for developing and brainstorming new ideas, and for small groups. Talk lists with many subscribers, or with a few people who tend to post many messages can generate lots of email for list subscribers; not all members of your group may want to receive that much mail.

Community Connections mailing lists are limited to 100 subscribers. If you have a very large group, contact us for other alternatives. If you would like to have more than one mailing list, we can provide additional Community Connections mailing lists for a very small yearly fee.
