Macintosh Basics

Hardware:

Objective: Identify the basic parts of this Macintosh, understand their function and be able to turn on and properly turn off the computer.

  • Power on button
  • Shutting down (turning off) the Mac and importance of this step
  • CPU:
    • hard drive
    • floppy drive
    • CD-ROM drive
  • Monitor and controls
  • Keyboard and mouse
  • Cable connections

The Desktop:

Objective: Identify the primary icons on the desktop.

  • Primary icons:
    • hard drive icon
    • floppy drive icon
    • trash can icon

  • Use of the mouse to control the desktop
    Objective: Use the mouse to move the cursor around the screen and perform the following skills:
    open and select
    • Find information about your computer from the Apple Menu
    • Rename your floppy disk
    • Double click on the floppy disk to open it
    • Size the window of your floppy disk
    • Move an icon on your disk
    • double-click to open an icon or launch the application an open a file

  • Menu Bar
    Objective: Recognize the functions from each menu option.
    • Apple
    • File
    • Edit
      • View - Use the floppy disk to view the contents by name, small icon then size of file
      • Label - Make one of your files HOT
    • Special

  • I need HELP!
    Objective: Identify where assistance is available and use these options to answer a question.

Windows and Icons:

Objective: Understand what windows and icons represent and perform the skills to manage windows on the desktop.

  • Recognizing icon shapes and what they represent
    • folder
    • file
    • application

  • Moving an icon and a window

  • Understanding the parts of a window:
    • name
    • close
    • size box
    • scroll bars

  • Recognizing active and inactive windows

File Management:

Objective: Understand how to manage folders.

Folder basics:

  • Create a folder
    • Create a folder called 3-28-96 on the floppy disk

  • Name and rename a folder
    • Rename the folder to Your Last Name

  • Throw away a folder

Floppy disk basics:

Objective: Demonstrate these skills:

  • Eject (use PUT AWAY from thethe floppy disk

  • Lock the floppy disk and insert it back into the machine.
    • Lock the disk. How can you tell it is locked when you open the floppy disk window?

  • Eject and unlock the disk.
    • Find two files on your floppy disk that begin with the letters zane
    • Copy one of the Zane files from your floppy disk to your hard disk
    • Remove the Zane file from the hard disk.

  • Find an application or file
  • Make and use an alias
  • Print
  • Keyboard short cuts
  • Initialize or format a floppy disk
  • Quitting an application that seems to be locked
  • Rebooting the computer
